Holding onto the Dream
Dreaming is easy.
Most of us have probably had more dreams than we can count. Some are fleeting, some are just enough of an escape to keep us going until a challenge or pain eases. And then there are the ones we really want to hold onto, the ones we want to come true.
We work at them; we figure out ways to make things happen. We celebrate the steps forward, especially the ones where we can feel the movement under us.
Then comes along a day or two or three where we wonder if the dream is ever going to happen. Sure, we’ve made progress toward it, yet the fruition of it feels like a million miles away. And it’s hard to understand because in our minds we can taste it, touch it, feel it. Still, reality is something different.
My dreams have never been small. I still have some hefty ones I want to see come true. Along the way, I’ve accomplished other things and taken detours. Aspects of the dreams have changed. A few things I’ve let go of.
I work hard, I believe in it. Yet some days the hardest part is holding onto that dream that I’m working toward. It’s a challenge not to get lost in the distractions and challenges. It’s like swimming in choppy water, knowing if you hang on that it will smooth out ahead. It’s easier when you can see the smoother water ahead. Otherwise, you have to believe that it will smooth out. But it’s no different than darkness– eventually light must come.
People say it’s about the journey, not the destination. I believe it’s about both. I still want to get there and I’m holding on to make sure that I do.
